A Lesson From Production: Why Auto-Print Became a 'Smart' Setting Instead of Just On or Off
Auto-print for receipts is a simple idea: once an invoice is confirmed, the receipt prints with no extra button press from the cashier. But the TtaKkaa team found that a previous fix for one problem caused a different problem for shops already running smoothly, and this lesson covers how it got fixed properly without reintroducing the original bug.
The original problem: a print prompt appearing with no printer
In an earlier fix, the default for auto-print was flipped from "on" to "off" to stop a print prompt from appearing on devices with no printer connected at all — a genuinely annoying issue on new devices.
The side effect: already-running shops got affected
But that fix also affected shops that already had a printer connected and relied on auto-print, because they were relying on the old default rather than having explicitly set the option themselves — so printing stopped for shops used to it, which was worse than the original problem.
The fix: a three-state setting instead of two
The TtaKkaa team changed the setting from just "on/off" to a third "unset" state: if the cashier or admin explicitly set the option (on or off), that decision always wins. If the setting is still "unset," the system checks whether the device itself actually has a printer configured: if it does, auto-print stays on (existing shops keep working untouched); if it doesn't, it stays off (new devices stay quiet, with no annoying prompts).
The numbers, honestly
71 tests passed after the fix, covering the case where a manual decision always wins, and both unset cases with and without a configured printer. The lesson here is that a quick fix for one problem can open a different one if it doesn't cover every case, and the right fix was a clear third state, not reverting to the old default.
If you already have a receipt printer connected
Auto-print stays working with the behavior you're used to, and you can always turn it on or off manually from the printer settings. Check the receipt printer buying guide if you're still setting up your hardware.

Does auto-print work by default without me configuring anything?
If your shop already has a printer connected, auto-print stays working as it was. On a new device with no printer, auto-print stays off until you actually connect one.
Can I manually turn auto-print on or off?
Yes, any manual choice you make (on or off) from the printer settings screen always wins as the final decision, regardless of the device's state.
